IP and Product Safety a Focus at European Commission Meeting

Most intellectual property rights battles are about securing the rights to get economic benefit from an idea, but there are other reasons as well. One of them is product safety. A knockoff product that tries to copy an original IP, but does it poorly, can put consumers at risk.

This concern was presented at a recent European Commission meeting. The Commission released a new EU action plan and a revised strategy for the protection and enforcement of IP in countries outside the EU. The US is doing similar things with actions like the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The EU’s plan calls for studying which countries have weak IP protection and enforcement. The Commission believes that the EU must take a stand on IP rights to show the world the importance of these protections not just for IP owners, but for consumers as well.
